Shinjuku Gyoemmae Residence

The Shinjuku Gyoemmae Residence is a modern 15-storey apartment building with 118 units, located at the intersection of Gaien Nishi-Dori and Yasukuni Dori streets, just three minutes from Shinjuku Gyoemmae Station. Built on a 560m² triangular site, it replaces an older building, blending contemporary architecture with the historic and urban character of Tomihisacho, a neighborhood on the border of Shinjuku’s skyscraper and residential zones.
The triangular shape of the site and structural elements posed significant challenges, leading to innovative design solutions. Apartments on the upper floors feature higher ceilings with loft spaces in various configurations, such as L-shaped and double lofts, creating versatile layouts. On the ground floor, the entrance hall incorporates essential facilities like parking, bicycle storage, and bin areas. A co-working space was added, reflecting the growing demand for remote work solutions.
The facade is designed to balance practicality and aesthetics. Balconies, which house air conditioning units and serve as emergency escape routes, are concealed behind solid dark grey aluminium panels, unifying the appearance of functional elements. Horizontal concrete slabs extend outward, creating clean lines, while vertical aluminium louvers form a cage-like structure, adding a modern, refined look to the building.
Material selection played a key role in achieving a cohesive design. Champagne-grey aluminium louvers were paired with textured concrete painted to complement their reflective qualities. This careful combination ensures a seamless blend of materials and a sophisticated facade.
Internally, fine aluminium louvers wrap structural elements, maintaining an open interior while keeping the exterior sleek. This thoughtful design enhances the streetscape, harmonizing with its urban surroundings.
